英大衆紙Daily Mailは7月7日、駐米大使のSir Kim Darrochから英外務省への報告の機密公電の内容を明らかにした。
2017年から現在に至るまでのもので、その中でトランプ政権について「今後、より正常な状態に近づくことや、機能不全、予見不可能性、派閥ごとの分断、外交的なまずさ、無能さが改善されるとはまず考えられない」などと報告している。

これを知り、Trump大統領は7月8日、ツイッターで呟いた。
英国とメイ首相のBrexit の扱いはひどい。ひどいことになっている。首相にはこうしたらと言ったのに、逆のことをしている。

次期英首相候補のハント外相は「私は米政権についてや米政権との関係に関する大使の評価に同意しないことを明確にしている。ただ彼が率直な評価を下す権利は擁護する」と述べた。その上で、メモを漏えいした人物は「重大な結果」に直面するとした。
一方、ブレグジット党のナイジェル・ファラージ党首はツイッターで、大使は「この職務にまったく不適任で、辞任が早ければ早い方が良い」と書いた。
Trump 大統領は翌日、再び呟いた。
英国が米国に押し付けた頭のおかしい大使を我々はよく思っていない。とてもばかなやつだ。

I don't know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the USA now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far and they are both only getting bigger, better and stronger.....Thank you, Mr. President!

Darroch大使は7月10日、辞任した。 大使は書簡で「公電文書が大使館から漏えいして以来、自身の立場、および大使としての在任期間を巡る憶測が飛び交っている。こうした憶測に終止符を打ちたい。現状では自分自身の役割を自分が望むように果たすことは不可能になっている」とした。
大使の任期は年末までだった。
