Ineosは8月18日、英国のPEDL（Petroleum Exploration and Development Licence）の133鉱区の権益の51%を取得し、初めてシェール開発に参加すると発表した。
PEDL 133鉱区はMidland Valleyにあり、IneosのGrangemouth石油精製・石油化学コンプレックスを含む329km2をカバーする。
同社はまず、ノルウェーのRafnes工場とGrangemouthで輸入エタンを使用する。

Ineosでは、「昨年来、米国からシェールガス探査・開発の専門家を招聘している。シェールガスを燃料及び原料として使用できる数少ない企業の一つであり、これは当然の行動である」としている。
同社はPEDL 133鉱区の権益の51%をBG
Groupから購入する。購入金額は明らかにしていない。
残りの49%はDart Energyが所有している。
Dart Energyでは、同鉱区には4.4兆立方フィート(tcf) のガスが埋蔵されていると推測している。
Dart Energyは英国のシェール開発企業の一つだが、2014年5月に同業のIGas Energyが買収を決めた。

英国では、2011年5月にイングランド北部での坑井作業中に微小地震が発生したためフラッキング（水圧破砕法） が禁止されていたが、2012年12月にエネルギー・気候変動省がフラッキングによる開発を許可すると発表した。
英政府は2013年に、シェールガス開発業者に対する減税案や、開発地域の住民に対する業界主導の利益還元策も発表するなど、シェールガス開発の促進に向け次々と政策を打ち出している。
キャメロン首相は本年1月、シェールガス開発の行われる自治体に対し税制優遇を行う方針を打ち出した。
プロジェクトから徴収する統一事業税のうち、自治体の取り分を現行の50％から100％に引き上げる。
英国には技術的に採掘可能なシェールガスが 26兆tcf あるとみられて いる。
しかし、フラッキング（水圧破砕法）をめぐっては環境への影響を懸念する声も根強い。

IGas will be the operator of the initial exploration programme, with Total subsequently taking over operatorship as the project moves towards development.

Total は石油メジャーとして初めて英国でのシェールガス開発を行う。
