韓国石油公社(KNOC)とオーストラリアの石油探査企業 Woodside Petroleumは12月10日、日本海のBlock 8、Block 6-1-N 鉱区の深海で精密探査を行った結果、韓国の年間天然ガス消費量の1.3倍に相当するガスが埋蔵されているとみられることが判明したと発表した。
3次元（3D）精密探査の結果、生産可能なガスの埋蔵量は3200万－3600万トンと推定された。具体的な埋蔵量は来年実施する試掘で確認する。
Block 8、Block 6-1-N は浦項市の沖合いにある。その南部にあるBlock 6-1-Cでは1988年にKNOCが東海1号ガス田(DH-1) を発見し、2001年に開発許可を受け、2004年から生産を開始した。更に2005年に近くに東海2号ガス田(DH-2) を発見、開発の準備をしている。
Woodsideは2004年の東海1号の生産開始後、大陸棚に石油やガスが埋蔵されている可能性が高いことに着目し、KNOCの探査資料を約１年間かけて再分析し、ガス田の可能性を予測した。
2007年2月、KNOCとWoodsideは50/50での共同開発契約を締結した。
韓国では黄海側と日本海側、及び日韓共同開発地域（JDZ)で石油とガスの探査が進められている。

SEOUL (Dow Jones Newswires), Aug. 13, 2009 South Korea's state-run oil developer Korea National Oil Corp. and Australia's Woodside Petroleum plan to conduct exploratory drilling in Block 8 and the northern part of Block 6-1 in the East Sea in early 2011, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy Thursday. The two companies did preliminary exploration of the two blocks, covering 12,560 square kilometers, until June this year after having obtained the exploration right in February 2007, the ministry said in a statement. After a detailed analysis, they have determined the possibility of discovering oil and gas is quite high and decided to proceed with the second phase of the project, which runs from August this year to August 2011. The third phase runs until February 2013, it said. It's the first time a foreign company has joined an oil and gas block exploration project in the East Sea since the early 1990s, after Kirkland Resources of the U.K. pulled out in 1994 after failing to discover oil and gas.
